According to the "India Rooftop Photovoltaic Market Report for 2023 and the Fourth Quarter" recently released by the research firm Mercom India Research, India installed 1.7GW of rooftop photovoltaic systems in 2023, which is the country's first record of installing rooftop photovoltaic capacity. The second year of high school.
However, India's installed PV system capacity growth in 2023 is only 3.7% as many commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers are delaying the installation of PV systems as they wait for PV module prices to stabilize. Mercom India Research expects lower prices for photovoltaic modules in early 2024 to help reduce the installation cost of photovoltaic systems.
Explaining the reasons why commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers are delaying the installation of PV systems in 2023, Priya Sanjay, managing director of Mercom India Research, said: “PV module prices remain high in the first half of 2023, and some consumers are concerned about There is a lot of confusion about the suitability of the ALMM (Approved Models and Manufacturers List) for rooftop PV projects.”
Earlier this month, India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy suspended its order to re-implement the ALMM regulations from April 1, 2024. The ministry had earlier confirmed the re-implementation of the ALMM regulations but granted exemptions to open PV projects and PV projects in advanced stages of construction, as well as rooftop PV projects without subsidies.
By the end of December 2023, the cumulative installed capacity of rooftop photovoltaic systems in India will reach 10.5GW.
Residential rooftop PV systems will account for more than half of India’s new rooftop PV systems in 2023. The report also found that thanks to the decline in photovoltaic module prices, the installation cost of rooftop photovoltaic systems fell by 10% month-on-month and 21.6% year-on-year.
India installed 406MW of rooftop PV systems in the fourth quarter of 2023, down 5.8% compared to the previous quarter and down 15.9% compared to the 483MW installed in the fourth quarter of 2022.
"This is due to the price of photovoltaic modules starting to fall in the second half of 2023, and installers are delaying the installation of rooftop photovoltaic systems waiting for costs to stabilize," Priya Sanjay said.
Rooftop photovoltaic systems installed in various states in India
Gujarat had the highest installed capacity of rooftop PV systems in the fourth quarter of 2023, accounting for 42.6% of India’s installed rooftop PV systems in the quarter. By the end of 2023, Gujarat has once again emerged as the leader in India's rooftop PV market, accounting for 27.3% of the country's cumulative installed rooftop PV system capacity, followed by Maharashtra and Rajasthan with 13.3% and 8.1% respectively.
"This is mainly attributable to the state-owned power distribution companies in Gujarat," said Priya Sanjay, adding that the state's power distribution companies, which are among the highest-rated companies in India, will receive less subsidies by installing rooftop photovoltaic systems for agricultural and residential customers. number of consumers.
However, compared with 2022, the installed capacity of rooftop photovoltaic systems tendered in Gujarat in 2023 dropped by 45.7%. Uttar Pradesh has become India's most active state in bidding, accounting for 44.2% of India's 1.2GW rooftop photovoltaic system bidding in 2023.
In addition, tenders for rooftop photovoltaic systems installed in government buildings accounted for nearly 57% of the announced tender capacity.
The top ten states account for 77.3% of the total rooftop PV capacity installed in India.
